When it Comes to Fire Safety, Mix it Up!

Pictured above is a System Sensor Smoke Detector which One Source carries

Smoke detectors and heat detectors are two different types of devices.  Some would say, "Obviously."  Others may think, "Aren't they kind of the same?  Isn't either type good enough to protect me?"

Clearly one type detects smoke and the other type detects heat, or more accurately, changes in temperature.  But where and when is one over the other preferred?

The similarities are that both devices detect the properties of fire combustion.  This property is obviously smoke, or soot, in the case of smoke detectors, but with heat detectors, they do not pick up smoke at all.

This is why they may be best situated in areas such as the kitchen and attic where smoke detectors are not recommended.  Clearly, too much smoke from cooking would trip the smoke detectors in the kitchen, and the attic, too much dust and other materials would disrupt their proper operation.

So to use a reliable cliche, "Variety is the spice of life."  Don't just use smoke detectors like so many households rely on solely--use a combination.  And the "life" referred to in the cliche quote above could be yours or someone you love...saved.

Please consult with your security company, the state guidelines for smoke & heat detectors in NH, MA or whichever state your reside in, as well as your local fire department.
