With the holidays upon us and the increase in customer volume in stores, retailers may be asking, what can we do to make sure profit margins don’t slip?

Access control

Will my system update automatically and unlock at the appropriate time or will my system be an hour behind or ahead?

Most systems will update automatically though the computer on which the access control software runs.  Make sure that the computer is not shut down for the weekend. When the time changes on the computer correctly, access to the build will be accurate and on time, allowing employees to enter the building without a problem and the doors to lock at the scheduled time.

How does this work?

The server/PC communicates with a time server like Network Time Protocol NTP, which uses Coordinated Universal Time UTC, (the US civilian time standards), to synchronize computer clock times to a millisecond. 

The NTP updates the time on the server/PC, which in turn tells the software to update the time on the panel, which tells the doors to lock and unlock at the correct time. 

 The automatic time adjustment depends on what the time server tells the server/PC.  Almost all systems do this automatically; very few need a manual change.

What do I do if my computer was not on and the clocks did not adjust?

Turn the computer on, check the time, if it is incorrect, manually adjust it, then download or initialize the panels.  If you are still having issues consult your security provider. 

Security System

Will my system update to automatically arm and disarm my system at the programmed time?

Your system has an internal clock which should change the time in the panel.

If your system is over 20+ years old you may have an issue. It may even be time to update your panel.

Check batteries

Which devices should I check?

Daylight Savings Time is a great reminder to check the batteries in wireless window contacts, panel batteries, motion detectors, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

NOTE: If you are purchasing your batteries on line and the life of the battery seem short, they may have been sitting on the shelf too long. Purchase them at the store locally, or call us, we have most batteries in stock.

Testing your System

We recommend testing your system at least once a month to make sure it is communicating and working properly.

One of the most vulnerable parts of a building is the windows.  Installing security glass laminates adds a layer of security that can help protect people and property.  This state-of-the-art laminate is designed to withstand impacts from forced entry or natural disasters. 

Laminates are thin but incredibly strong layers of polyester material. Layers are sandwiched together on the window with a super strong adhesive. These laminates absorb the shock of a blunt object and disperse the energy from the impact.  The more the laminated glass is struck the stronger it becomes.

The short answer would be yes. With the use of smart cards comes an added layer of protection. Have you ever wondered if someone could steal your access or your employee’s access to a building? You may think yes if I lost my access card, but what if you are standing in a crowd or in an elevator, would you be able to tell if someone was electronically pick pocketing you (also called crowd hacking)? Some electronic pick pocketing equipment can be used up to 30 feet away hidden in a normal computer case or messenger bag.

Smart cards have Mifare which is a technology that enables the card to have encrypted two-way communication between a card and a reader. Encryption needs to be authenticated on both ends. Some benefits include, increased data storage capacity, and reliability as each card has a unique serial number. The information on the card can be PIN coded and /or read-write protected and can be updated without issuing another card.

With the use of a standard RFID Proximity card, the information transmitted from the card is fixed via either a high or low frequency antenna embedded within the card.  When the card comes within the proximity of the readers radio waves, data is easily pulled from the card by the reader; the card has no problem releasing the information to the reader. There is no encryption to authenticate, which creates an easy target for hackers.

So how can you protect your business and employees? One way is to use a dual technology smart card, which contains an embedded computer chip or integrated circuit that stores and transacts data, as well as low and high frequency antennas inside the card. In order to hack the card the hacker would need to know that there are 3 different technologies within the card. Most often only one type of technology is stolen.

I recently read an article about how a parent with a terminal illness watched their kids play ball via a network camera stream. More and more communities are using video surveillance in parks to enhance security and deter vandalism. Allowing parents access to the video feed can allow them the ability to watch their children play ball from across town or across the world, keeping families connected. 

There are many factors as to why parents cannot make it to their child’s game including deployment, illness, work, travel or having multiple kids playing ball at the same time at different fields.

Today we live in a time when there is so much uncertainty.  As a business owner you have a responsibility to protect your employees and customers to the best of your ability. Using panic notifications in specific areas of your organization can help protect your employees and bring some peace of mind. 

A panic button is a small hidden button, easily accessible by an employee, used to call for help. In the past, panic buttons were typically wired to notify police of an emergency situation.  However, we have found that in some situations employees would like to summon someone to help them but are uncomfortable pressing a button that would summon the police.  Even if they did press the button to summon the police, oftentimes other employees in the building are unaware that the person needs immediate help.

We have found that a user is more likely to push a panic button earlier in an uncomfortable situation if they know that the panic button notification will go directly to onsite security or a member of the employee ‘response team’ who is trained to help in emergency situations. These response team members are directed to make a determination if the situation can be handled in house or if they need to call 911. 

There are many areas in a building where panic buttons can be placed. Anywhere a confrontation with the public or employee may occur, such as the reception or lobby area, security desk, management offices and HR departments should have a panic button. Shipping and receiving, as well as customer service and register areas should have panic buttons. 

The panic notification allows a person to quickly and silently call for help in a crisis or emergency situation, as well as bring help in the case of an uncomfortable situation.   There may be a situation where emergency personnel may not be needed but another person would be helpful.

There are various methods that can be used to notify the response team when a panic button has been pressed.  These can include paging systems, and devices that send voice messages, text messages or email messages directly to smartphones.
